Paver Base & Sand Guide
A standard paver installation requires 4-6" of compacted gravel base, 1" of bedding sand, and polymeric joint sand between the pavers. The base prevents frost heave and drainage issues. Use crushed stone (#57 or #21A) for the base — not sand.
Polymeric joint sand locks pavers together and inhibits weed growth. Figure 50 lbs of poly sand per 50-70 sq ft for typical paver joints. Always add 10% to all material estimates for waste and overage.
⚠️ Compaction Required: Base stone must be compacted in 2-3 inch lifts using a plate compactor. Do NOT place and compact the full depth at once — this leaves uncompacted material below the surface, causing settling and uneven pavers (trip hazard). Minimum recommended base depth: 4 inches for pedestrian use, 6+ inches for vehicular traffic. Install landscape fabric below the base stone to prevent weed growth.
