Brick Calculator

Calculate the number of bricks and mortar bags needed for your wall project.

Formula: Wall Area (sqft) = Length × Height. Bricks per sqft varies by size (standard ≈ 6.75/sqft). Mortar: 1 bag per ~35 sqft.

Common Brick Sizes Reference

Brick Type Dimensions (L x H) Bricks per sqft
Standard8" x 2.25"~6.75
Queen8" x 2.75"~5.76
King10" x 2.75"~4.61
Modular7.625" x 2.25"~6.86
Utility11.625" x 3.625"~3.00
⚠️ STRUCTURAL WARNING: This calculator estimates bricks for veneer and facade applications only. Freestanding brick walls above 4 feet require a proper concrete footing, steel reinforcement, and engineering review per local building codes. Unreinforced masonry walls can collapse and cause serious injury or death. Always consult a structural engineer for load-bearing or freestanding masonry walls.

About the Brick Calculator

Planning a brick wall, veneer, or patio project? This calculator takes the guesswork out of ordering materials. Simply enter your wall dimensions, choose your brick size, and get an accurate count of bricks and mortar bags needed. The calculator accounts for mortar joint width to ensure precise material estimates.

Brick counts depend on the size of the brick and the width of the mortar joints. Standard bricks (8" x 2.25") with 3/8" mortar joints require approximately 6.75 bricks per square foot of wall area. Larger bricks like queen and king sizes reduce the number needed per square foot but may cost more per unit. Always order 5-10% extra to account for breakage and cuts.

For mortar, one bag of pre-mixed mortar typically covers about 35 square feet of brick wall. The actual amount varies based on joint width and depth, brick porosity, and weather conditions during application. Consult your mortar manufacturer's specifications for the most accurate coverage estimates for your specific project.
