TV Mount Height Calculator

Find the optimal mounting height for your TV based on screen size, viewing distance, and seated eye height.

⚠️ MOUNTING SAFETY: TVs MUST be mounted into wall studs using appropriate lag bolts, or into concrete/masonry with properly rated anchors. NEVER mount a TV into drywall only — it WILL fall. A falling TV can cause serious injury or death, especially to children. Verify your mount's weight rating exceeds your TV's weight. Use a stud finder to locate studs before drilling. Secure all cables to prevent strangulation hazards. If unsure, hire a professional installer.

How to Determine the Right TV Mounting Height

The ideal TV mounting height places the center of the screen near your seated eye level to minimize neck strain. For most people sitting on a standard sofa, eye height is approximately 42 inches from the floor. When the viewing distance is greater than about 8 feet, a slight upward tilt of 1-2 inches per extra foot of distance improves comfort because your natural gaze angle is slightly downward when looking straight ahead.

Screen size matters because a larger TV's center point is higher above its bottom edge. A 55-inch TV has a screen height of roughly 27 inches, so the bottom of the TV would sit well below eye level when the center is at 42 inches. This calculator accounts for the 16:9 aspect ratio standard in modern TVs and computes the exact screen height from the diagonal measurement.

For bedrooms where you watch from a reclined position, eye height drops to around 36 inches. For standing-height bars or kitchens, eye height may be 56-62 inches. Adjust the seated eye height input to match your actual viewing position for the best results. The THX recommendation is to keep the upward viewing angle to the center of the screen below 15 degrees for comfortable extended viewing.

Anti-Tip Safety for Mounted TVs

Child safety is critical. Even wall-mounted TVs can be pulled down by children tugging on cables or climbing furniture placed beneath the TV. Use cable management covers or in-wall cable routing to eliminate dangling cords. Anchor all furniture near the TV to the wall with anti-tip straps. Keep remote controls and other attractive items away from the TV area to discourage children from climbing. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that a child is injured by a falling TV every 30 minutes. Follow all manufacturer instructions for your specific mount and TV model.
