About the Roofing Shingle Calculator
Accurately estimating roofing materials is critical for any roofing project. This calculator accounts for roof pitch, which increases the actual surface area compared to the flat footprint, and includes a configurable waste factor for cuts, ridges, valleys, and damaged shingles during installation.
Roofing materials are measured in "squares," where one square equals 100 square feet of roof area. Standard three-tab and architectural shingles typically require three bundles per square. The pitch multiplier converts your flat roof footprint into the actual sloped surface area, with steeper pitches requiring significantly more material.
For complex roof shapes with multiple ridges, valleys, or dormers, consider calculating each section separately and adding 15-20% waste instead of the standard 10%. Always verify measurements from the actual roof or architectural plans rather than estimating from ground level, as perspective can be deceiving on steeper pitches.
Additional Materials Needed: This calculator estimates field shingles only. A complete roofing job also requires: ridge cap shingles (ridge length / 25 LF per bundle), starter strip (perimeter length), underlayment (roof area / roll coverage), and drip edge (eave + rake length). 3-bundle-per-square assumes standard architectural shingles — premium/designer shingles may be 4-5 bundles per square.
