How to Bill Customers as a Contractor
Most contractors bill by the hour for labor plus a markup on materials. A standard material markup is 15-25% — this covers your time sourcing materials, running to the supply house, and managing the procurement process. Some contractors bill a flat trip charge plus hourly labor.
For overtime: if you work more than 8 hours in a day on a commercial project, or more than 40 hours in a week, many states require time-and-a-half. Even for private residential work, it's fair to charge a higher rate for late evenings, weekends, and overtime work.
